Butyl rubber, also known as isobutylene-isoprene rubber (IIR), is a synthetic rubber made by the polymerization of isobutylene with a small percentage of isoprene. It is widely recognized for its excellent impermeability to gases and moisture, high elasticity, and strong resistance to chemicals, ozone, and weathering. These properties make it ideal for applications requiring air retention, such as inner tubes, tire liners, and sealants. Its low gas permeability also allows its use in protective clothing, pharmaceutical stoppers, and specialized industrial applications where airtight sealing is essential.

In addition to its sealing and insulating qualities, butyl rubber demonstrates good vibration damping and shock absorption properties, making it suitable for automotive parts, adhesives, and construction sealants. It performs well in a wide temperature range and can be modified, such as by halogenation (creating halobutyl rubber), to enhance its compatibility with other materials and improve heat and aging resistance.
